Biography

Ruth Johndrow with her most popular works.

Ruth has expressed her soulful creativity from an early age beginning with story writing, quilting and jewelry making. Her background in textile arts was the foundation on which she developed her eye for shape, color, pattern and composition. Using ZentangleTM (creating images using pen and ink to draw structured patterns) as a first step in creating free-form two-dimensional works, her compositions progressed by adding color and experimenting with a wide variety of ink, pens, paint and textures.

Primarily self-taught, she has always drawn inspiration from natural beauty and the conflict of personal metamorphosis; the various seasons of creativity are what you see before you.

Ruth paints from intuition, blending light, color, patterns, and textures to create a variety of two and three-dimensional pieces. Now a mixed media artist, whose art expresses a wide variety of spirituality, soul and emotion, Ruth’s work has been juried into art shows in both Massachusetts and Virginia.

Prior to moving to Chesapeake in 2018, Ruth spent a couple of years immersing herself in practice and study with artists in greater Boston. She became a Certified ZentangleTM Teacher in 2017, and has completed many workshops and online training sessions in a variety of disciplines including abstract painting, pen and ink, watercolor creations, and handmade bookbinding. Ruth Azen Johndrow has been an associate artist at the d’Art Center in Norfolk, VA for two years.
